Using a Pre-Package Installation / Setup:

In this tutorial, we'll give a brief overview of how to use Softaculous to install your WordPress installation. The hosting environment we use is O.W.M Consulting.

Updating via FTP

Unlike when installing the theme, we suggest you strictly stick to FTP updates as this ensures the proper files get overwritten and new files added during updates.

General Settings

Inside the General theme options you will find the ability to upload logos (desktop and mobile), as well global background images, define your image resizer scripts, add favicon, menu related options and much more. These general options are usually options not found in the other category specific tabs but when in doubt, feel free to contact us for buyer support.

Home Settings

These settings are intended to be used on the 'dynamic homepage' and not a static homepage. If you assigned your homepage as a Static Page via "Settings >> Reading" then you would customize your homepage settings via the page you've assigned as your homepage. Otherwise, the dynamic homepage which requires no additional page setups is all available here. Assign your categories, transition effects, enable titles, descriptions, change order of the images and also the ability to assign videos instead of image backgrounds.

Style Options

Here you will be able to personalize and customize your installation by adding unique colours combinations for things such as Text, Links, Menu Items, Theme Opacity / Transparency, Font Sizes, Font Families (using Google Web Fonts) and much more.

Pages / Posts

Here you'll be able to manage the options related to your Pages & Posts on a global level (which can also be managed on a per-page/post basis). These options include such things as disabling comments, meta options, widget ready footers, headers and much more. You can also setup the Blog Posts to have Rich Text Formatting (RTF - by default excerpts are automatic, but enabling RTF settings will allow you more control, formatting and the ability to customize your exceprt lengths with read-more tags.

Gallery / Portfolio

Here you'll be able to control a few options related to Galleries and Portfolios, though most importantly, the ability to disable lightbox titles/descriptions and social share. You can also enable the Lazyloader from here so it is applied to both Galleries and Portfolios (improving page load time when there are lots of images). Though more options are available via these Page Templates and Shortcodes related to Galleries and Portfolios.

Contact Page

If using the Page Template for Contact Form, here is where you'd define those settings used by the Contact Page Template. If you're looking for more freedom with your contact forms it may be suggested you consider using the Contact Shortcode, or as an alternative (and in the event your hosting environment doesn't like our contact scripts) you can install and enable Contact Form 7.

Social Networks

We've included the most popular social networks that have been requested by our buyers but we're sure there are some missing. If you do not find the social network you want included, you can use the Support Forums and we can instruct you how to add additional social networks. Though these are fairly straight forward, you simply need to add your URL's. You also have the option to make these open in the same tab or new tab, as well enable use of the social networks in your Menu.

Miscellaneous

The Miscellaneous Options are fairly important to know about, as it is here you can add things like CSS Overrides, Header Scripts, Custom 404 Messages, Google Analytics, Enable/Disable Right Clicks and edit the footer copyright messages. This would be an idea use when adding new CSS to your theme and instead of adding it to the style.css, you can maintain your changes when updating by adding those to the CSS overrides or header scripts. Otherwise, if making modifications, we'd encourage you to use the Child Theme.

Backup Options

Really handy if you're playing around with the options but don't want to loose what you had previously setup. You can use this to grab a backup of your theme options and restore them afterwards just as you backed them up. This is also handy for when testing different approaches with the way you want your website to look and feel when setup. We still encourage full backups but this helps with backing up your options.

One of the more popular features in our theme is the fullscreen homepage that can be built with either a Single Image, Slider (group of images) or a Video (using YouTube, Vimeo or MP4). To re-create the homepage we've created you can achieve this by one of two ways: either dynamically (no extra steps required) or by use of a static page being assigned as your homepage. Below, we've created two video tutorials that will help you in achieving a homepage designed like ours. Though you can essentially do anything with your homepage and would encourage your creativity to let loose and see what's possible from within - just remember to have fun while doing it!

Dynamic [Default] Homepage

The dynamic homepage is by far the easiest solution to getting started. It's as simple as installing the theme and customizing your Theme Options and uploading a few Slider images (or using a video if that is your preference).

• Step 1 - Choose whether you want a Video or Slider as your homepage.
• Step 2 - IF a Slider is your choice, you'll need to upload some slider images.
• Step 3 - IF a Video is your choice, you'll need to configure those options.
• Step 4 - Go to Theme Options >> Home Settings and start making changes!

Static Page Homepage

The static page homepage is when you use your Reading options to assign a Static Page as your homepage (which is created using Pages). In this scenario you'll be required to customize your homepage on that single static page.

• Step 1 - Create a New Page and call it "Home" or something similar (recognizable).
• Step 2 - Edit your meta-options in that page to setup the page as desired.
• Step 3 - Save your new page and review them by visiting the page created.
• Step 4 - Go to Settings >> Reading and assign this page as your Static Homepage.

Portfolios extend a lot of options that make them resourceful and great for outside-the-box ideas! Unlike with Galleries, when using Portfolios you can link these to internal pages or posts, as well external website pages. You can create a Portfolio to display projects you've completed or showcase work or your client photo shoots.

Portfolios with Shortcodes

We recommend and suggest creating your Portfolio pages with shortcodes vs. page templates. Shortcodes give added features and possibilities extending what's available to portfolios built with Page Templates (such as filtered portfolios).

• Step 1 - Create some Portfolio Categories via Dashboard >> Portfolio >> Categories.
• Step 2 - Next you'll want to create some Portfolio Posts (items) to assign to those.
• Step 3 - After creating your posts, go create a new Page to show these Portfolio posts.
• Step 4 - Insert the Portfolio Shortcode and customize the shortcode options.
• Step 5 - Publish your page and now based on your shortcode, it will display those.

Portfolios with Page Templates

Page Templates are a little outdated but they're still optional (and how we originally created this). They've some drawbacks vs shortcodes as they're not nearly as flexible in their use, nor as many conditional options to personalize.

• Step 1 - Create some Portfolio Categories via Dashboard >> Portfolio >> Categories.
• Step 2 - Next you'll want to create some Portfolio Posts (items) to assign to those.
• Step 3 - After creating your posts, go create a new Page to show these Portfolio posts.
• Step 4 - On this page being created, find the Page Attributes and assign the Portfolio.
• Step 5 - In the meta options you'll find Page & Portfolio Options for this page.
• Step 6 - Assign it the Category (required), Order and Page Layout that you want.
• Step 7 - Publish your page and now based on your meta options, it will display those.

Portfolio Shortcode Explained:

The above is an example of a standard Portfolio Shortcode (when inserted from the Shortcode generator). You can customize the shortcode to suit your specific needs.

Scenario #1: Photographer Use

Portfolios are great tool to Photographers who want to share their work with clients. Imagine you have just finished a client session and headed home to edit your days work. After you've completed, you can then create a Portfolio, add a featured image (and assign a few extras to show in lightbox when opened) and inside that portfolio item you add a Gallery that displays all the images from your day.

But wait! Maybe you need those images to be private and only viewable by the client? No problem! You can use WordPress' Password Protect feature and share the login credentials with your client. While a bit basic, it does give you that added protection and professionalism. Additionally - and if interested - you can get more out of the experience by using a membership manager plugin such as S2Member or similar to handle your client protected content. There's a free version and it has a lot to offer!

Two methods built in and the third using Contact Form 7

With the KingSize WordPress theme, you have the option of creating a Contact Form by means of a Contact Page Template or using the Contact Form Shortcode. In some environment however, due to security enhancements, or lack of PHPMail, our contact forms may not work. In the event of this happening, we've included full support for Contact Form 7.

There are advantages in using Contact Form 7, such as the ability to use a dynamic Form Builder to creating specifically the contact forms you need and the ability to use multiple forms throughout the website. It's also widely supported by most hosting environments and usually actively updated and supported.

Shortcodes offer convenience!

Shortcodes were originally created for the purpose of making things easier (and less requirement for seeing code). It allows us to apply functionality and styling without the need of having to dwell inside the code that drives various themes.

Our theme comes with 30+ shortcodes and as time progresses, I'm sure more! This tutorial will demonstrate some uses of the shortcodes and how to find them.

All the shortcodes within the KingSize theme can be used from within any Page or Post Editor. Just look for the Unicorn like icon in the TinyMCE Toolbar of the editor.

As you browse the other sections of the demonstration website, you will also see that we've included examples of those shortcodes used (ie., Galleries, Portfolios, Tables, Toggles and more). 						IMPORTANT TO NOTE OUT:
						
						When updating your theme to version 5.1.9 we encourage you to BACKUP the website FIRST (before updating).
						
						Next, we strongly recommend due to new options to "RE-SAVE" your Theme Options (Save All Changes)!
						
						This will ensure that the new options added are correctly "configured" in your Theme Options going forward.
						
						
						THEME RELEASE NOTES:
						
						1. Some really important changes to the KingSize WordPress design that should be noted out BEFORE updating:
						
						   - slightly increased the width of the body container from "740px" to now use "750px".
						   - slightly increased the width of the menu container from "218px" to now use "220px".
						   - in previous versions the menu and body container used images but now coded in HEX (colour codes).
						   - this will affect users whom have updated their themes and replaced menu and body container images.
						   
						2. The "Default" navigation style still uses a single image for it's "ribbon point".
						
						   - This image will require being edited if you change the navigation colour as it's an image.
						   - The image is located in "/images/" and labeled as "/hide_menu_back.png" (only on the Default style).
						   
						3. We have introduced 3 new styles to the navigation/menu:
						
						   - Circular
						   - Rounded
						   - Squared
						   - Default (ribbon point)
						   
						   These new options will change the shape of the navigation/menu bottom (via Theme Options >> Style Options).
						   
						4. As mentioned above, we've included the ability to change the colours of the menu and body container backgrounds.
						
						   In previous versions these were using images and now they've been replaced and recoded using HEX codes (#000000).
						   
						   Added into the "Style Options" you can use a Colour Picker or enter your HEX code to choose your desired colours.
						   
						   Both the menu and body container colours are individually set so you can have two separate colours being used.
						   
						5. Added a bunch of new colour styling options for various elements throughout the theme. Giving you more control.
						
						   - There are a lot of elements, so if we've overlooked any, let us know and we will be sure to add those in to.
						   
						6. We've included "WPML Language Switcher / Flag Icons" in the navigation just beneath the Social Icons.
						
						   - When WPML is enabled, these language flag switchers will be available, but will not show unless it's enabled.
						
						7. Included all the default POST Meta Options in WooCommerce giving you the same abilities other posts have.
						
						   - This includes the ability to assign a unique background image.
						   - This includes the ability to assign a slider background.
						   - This includes the ability to assign a video background.
						   - This includes the ability to hide/show the navigation on load.
						   - This includes the ability to hide/show the sidebar if enabled.
						   - This includes the ability to temporarily hide the body on load.
						
						8. We've included in the Theme Options a new WooCommerce section. It's limited at the moment, but will expand.
						
						   - The ability to enable sidebars within the WooCommerce pages/posts.
						   - The ability to enable prices to be shown on the Product Shop pages.
						   - We've also included new options for styles in the Style Options.
						   - We've also included a custom sidebar pre-created for WooCommerce.
						   
						9. Fixed Mobile Backgrounds so not enabled by default within the Theme Options.
						
						10. Fixed the issue with line breaks in the Contact Widget helping support multiple email addresses not inline.
						
						11. Fixed the font colour in Blockquotes so it changes with the default font colours set in your Theme Options.
						
						12. Fixed several WP Debug Errors that were being thrown in the theme.
						
						13. Improved the Password Protected Pages/Posts native to WordPress with an improved look and feel to it's style.
						
						14. Important: Removed the Video Shortcodes as they were no longer necessary as it's native functionality in WordPress.
						
						    Going forward, from version 5.1.9 simply copy-and-paste your YouTube/Vimeo or other video URLs into the editor.

						THEME RELEASE NOTES:
						
						1. Added a new feature for "Mobile + Tablet Backgrounds" to be separate from the desktop used backgrounds.
						   This addition addresses a bug with Mobile Videos + AutoPlay + YouTube (limited to autoplay youtube).
						   On mobile devices, the video will constantly try and load when "Autoplay" is enabled.
						   As a solution to this, we've added an optional feature to enable a Background Image on mobiles instead.
						   This is available to Homepage Settings, individual Pages, Posts and Portfolio posts.
						
						2. Fixed the issue with Visual Composer tabs not showing when these specific elements are used.
						
						3. List and footer font colours were not being applied. We've added these to use the body font colours.
						
						4. Smooth Scroll Back to Top is a new feature that can be enabled via "Theme Options >> Pages / Posts".
						   This option, when enabled, will add a "Back to Top" arrow that will appear after 300px scrolling down.
						   
						5. Next/Previous Post Links (with Post Title) can be enabled via "Theme Options >> Pages / Posts".
						   When enabled, at the bottom of your posts it will display a Next/Previous article link below posts.
						   
						6. Added some enhanced styling for the WordPress Calendar Widget to better compliment our theme when used.
						
						7. Included a new "attachments" page that will display the attached image at fullwidth (with or without sidebar).
						
						8. When "Category Descriptions" are entered via Posts >> Categories these will now display beneath their titles.
						   So when viewing a category on the frontend for your posts, if a description is added, it'll display on here.
						   
						9. Added "Out of the Box" compatibility with Easy Digital Downloads that includes full support in our theme.
						   The design is currently basic and retains the default from Easy Digital Downloads but compliments our theme.
						   Our intention will be to expand on it's design and give more options in future releases.
						   For the time being, it works with Easy Digital Downloads out of the box with full functionality.
